Abstract
Urban public transportation systems play a crucial role in the dynamics of large cities, concentrating a significant part of the urban mobility and representing an essential service for urban development in the context of Smart Cities. Considering the increase of wireless solutions for integrated control and urban connectivity, Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) present advantages, such as low cost, low energy consumption, as well as transmission and data processing capabilities. In this context, this work proposes a solution for gathering, processing and analyzing data relative to the urban public transportation system, using WSNs based on technologies such as the Long Range Wide Area Networks (LoRaWAN) standard and Radio-frequency Identification (RFID). The proposed solution has been implemented in hardware, including sensor nodes and gateways, resulting in the development of low cost prototypes for the respective nodes. Field tests have been conducted, for different situations, demonstrating a system range of up to 4.5~km in favorable conditions (line of sight).
