Abstract

The use of the digital TV frequency band by secondary devices has been regulated in several countries. Such devices must operate using free frequency channels without causing significant interference to the primary devices. The Ofcom regulation in the United Kingdom defines as a premise the protection of only the digital TV receiver with outdoor antenna. The existence of both fixed receivers with indoor antenna and smartphones capable of receiving digital TV demonstrates the need to protect the digital TV service in the indoor environment. This protection is important since a device transmitting on an adjacent frequency channel may cause interference and unavailability of the receiver service when close to it. This paper presents a solution for this protection by estimating parameters obtained from the messages transmitted by the digital TV receiver. The proposal provides a scenario of indoor coexistence with low probability of interruption of the digital TV service.
