Abstract

This paper presents the potentials and challenges of a dynamic power saving technique in optical network units (ONUs) to achieve energy efficiency in passive optical networks. Simulation results show that, at the expense of a limited increase in packet average delay that does not compromise scheduling cycles, a significant reduction of the energy required by ONUs can be accomplished. The paper is concluded with a demonstration of a testbed of the proposed technique.
